00:00:02: Welcome everyone to From the Gym To Google, a podcast where we talk about real experiences with technology integration and education.
00:00:11: I am Courtney, a middle school health and physical education teacher And today i'm sharing my journey through this six-year planned program of Technology Integration And
00:00:27: I'm
00:00:27: Michael.
00:00:28: I am excited to hear about your experience because a lot of teachers, especially PE teachers sometimes wonder how technology really fits into an active classroom environment.
00:00:42: Exactly!
00:00:43: I used think technology in PE meant showing and occasional YouTube video or taking attendance digitally.
00:00:50: Now, Technology is woven almost every part my instruction in meaningful ways.
00:00:56: So where were you when you first started the program?
00:00:59: Honestly, I was comfortable with basic technology but i wasn't really integrating it intentionally.
00:01:06: I used Google Docs occasionally But most of my lessons Were still paper-based.
00:01:11: In PE students completed handwritten fitness logs and reflections in health class Projects for mostly posters or worksheets.
00:01:20: so what changed?
00:01:22: The biggest change was learning that technology should support learning goals, not just entertain students.
00:01:29: That idea came up repeatedly throughout the program.
00:01:32: I started asking myself how can technology make students more engaged reflective collaborative and independent learners?
00:01:41: So what are some examples of changes you made in your classroom?
00:01:45: One of first big changes is using Google Classroom consistently.
00:01:50: Before, students would lose papers constantly.
00:01:53: Now everything is organized digitally—assignments videos resources announcements and reflections.
00:02:01: In PE I started using QR codes.
00:02:04: at fitness stations Students scan the code And watch short demonstrations of exercises or skills before trying them themselves.
00:02:13: That's sister smart idea for middle school students who are always looking for an opportunity.
00:02:20: It really helped with independence and classroom management.
00:02:23: Students were not waiting for me constantly, they could replay instructions as needed.
00:02:29: Another big change was digital fitness journals using Google Forms.
00:02:33: Students tracked goals reflected on effort levels and monitored progress over time.
00:02:39: Did you notice changes in student engagement?
00:02:42: Absolutely!
00:02:48: could actually see growth over time.
00:02:51: One project I'm really proud of was a health class wellness campaign.
00:02:56: Students worked in groups to create digital presentations and short videos prompting topics like healthy eating, stress management ,and bullying prevention.
00:03:07: instead simply memorizing facts they were creating something authentic for real audience.
00:03:12: That sounds like authentic learning in
00:03:14: action.
00:03:15: Exactly!
00:03:16: One of the courses really emphasized Learning First Technology Second, and that completely changed my mindset.
00:03:23: Was everything successful right away?
00:03:26: Not even close.
00:03:28: There were definitely lessons that failed.
00:03:30: At first I tried using too many digital tools at once And students became overwhelmed.
00:03:36: I also underestimated how much structure middle school students need when using Chromebooks.
00:03:42: One lesson completely fell apart because students spent more time trying to figure out the app than actually learning the content.
00:03:49: I think every teacher can relate
00:03:51: that?
00:03:51: Definitely, but those experiences helped me grow!
00:03:55: I learned to simplify model expectations clearly and focus on tools that truly support learning goals.
00:04:02: .I also became more confident asking for help from instructional technology staff colleagues even student sometimes.
00:04:10: How has your classroom become more blended or personalized?
00:04:14: Students now have more voice and choice in their learning.
00:04:18: For example, on health class students can choose whether they want to create a slideshow infographic video project.
00:04:25: In PE student set personal fitness goals use digital reflections to monitor progress.
00:04:31: some students need extra demonstrations so instructional videos help them learn at their own pace.
00:04:37: Technology also helps me differentiate instruction more effectively.
00:04:42: Students can revisit materials any time instead of relying only on whole group instruction.
00:04:47: How has this experience changed you as a technology leader?
00:04:51: I'm much more confident now!
00:04:53: I used to feel like technology integration was something other teachers were better at.
00:04:58: Now, i regularly share ideas with colleagues help troubleshoot Google classroom issues and discuss strategies during department meetings.
00:05:07: I also realized that leadership doesn't mean being the expert at everything.
00:05:12: Sometimes, leadership just means being willing to try new things reflect honestly and encourage others.
00:05:18: Have you connected your technology used as standards or school goals?
00:05:23: Yes a lot of what i'm doing aligned with ISTE student standards especially empowered learner creative communicator in global collaborator.
00:05:34: Students are using technology to reflect, collaborate create and communicate in meaningful ways.
00:05:40: It also aligns with our school goals related to student engagement digital citizenship and blended learning.
00:05:47: What advice would you give other teachers who are nervous about integrating?
00:05:53: Start small.
00:05:54: You don't need to completely transform your classroom overnight.
00:05:57: pick one tool One lesson one strategy.
00:06:01: Focus on what helps students learn better Not what looks impressive.
00:06:06: Also, don't be afraid of mistakes!
00:06:08: Some of my best lessons came after failed attempts because I learned what students actually needed and finally remember that students do not expect perfection.
00:06:17: they appreciate teachers who are willing to learn alongside them.
00:06:21: That's
00:06:31: really the biggest takeaway from this journey.
00:06:33: Technology doesn't replace good teaching.
00:06:35: It enhances it when used intentionally as educators were constantly learning, adapting and growing this program helped me become more confident More reflective And we're willing to take risks in my teaching.
00:06:48: Thank you for sharing your journey today.
00:06:51: thank You For listening too from the gym to Google.
00:06:54: Hopefully This conversation encourages other teachers To explore new ways.
00:06:58: technology can support both Teaching & Student Learning.
00:07:02: See you next time!
